Dear Fifth Grade Families,
We are off to a great start this year with a great group of students! I am enjoying getting to know your child and love seeing their special personalities.
In math we are currently learning long division, multiplication, and order of operations. We will be learning adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions in the upcoming weeks. It is very important that your child knows their multiplication, addition, and subtraction facts in order to be successful and confident in fifth grade math concepts.
In Language Arts/Reading we will be studying the concepts of theme, main idea and summarizing. We will examine text structure elements including: comparing/contrasting, problem and solution, and making inferences /drawing conclusions. We will continue to emphasize the importance of providing text evidence to support answers to comprehension questions. We will also be working on building a strong vocabulary and using context clues to enhance our comprehension skills. In order to build stamina and practice their reading skills, students will be expected to read 5 nights a week for 20 minutes, for a total of 100 minutes per week. Students will be required to read novels and informational text. Also, we will be completing writing prompts throughout the year and it is necessary for your child to be able to write in complete sentences with correct punctuation and capitalization.
We are currently learning about ecosystems/ biomes, the water cycle, nitrogen cycle, and carbon cycle in science. We will be learning various concepts of weather within the next few weeks.
In Social Studies we are learning about the history of the United States from the early settlements of Jamestown through reconstruction after the Civil War.
In Health we are currently learning how to apply positive stress management strategies.
